Hello,

We are seeing consistent VSS errors on one of our client servers. It is a Windows Server 2019 instance on a VM.

The event ID is always 12289, and it always one of two error messages:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error DeviceIoControl(\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy216 - 0000000000000364,0x0053c198,0000026BD79B4110,0,0000026BD79B20F0,4096,[0]). hr = 0x80070057, The parameter is incorrect.

.

   Execution Context: System Provider

I have looked everywhere but can't find anything to help figure out what is going on. Any insight would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Derek

    Hello there,

The error message may be related to the Backup application that is running on the server.

Do you use any third-party software application to make a backup on the problematic server except Symantec BackupExec?

The VSS event ID 12289 may occur if the third-party backup application is used. If possible, we would like to suggest that you use Windows Server Backup which is a built-in feature on Windows Server to take backups.

Try registry modification from this thread and see if that helps https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/lync/en-US/1b926c85-b866-464b-9590-70506ba9d8ce/vss-issue-event-id-22-12289-12293-error-0x8004230f-failed-to-retrieve-volumes-that-are-eligible?forum=windowsbackup

This article describes issues in which Event ID 8019, 20, 8193, or 12302 is logged in the Application log. You receive an Error 0x8004230F or 0x80004002 error message. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/windows-server/backup-and-storage/volume-shadow-copy-service-events

Hope this resolves your Query !!
