I have a virtual 2016 IIS Server that blue screens after I install Microsoft Updates. This happened with the February Updates and the March Updates. The blue screen states "your pc ran into a problem and needs to restart...... ". The stop code is Registry Error. Each time I had to do the following to get the server up and running again.

From: Advanced troubleshooting screen

At command prompt on server:

went to C:\windows\system32\config

I backed up the current system/software:

1. Renamed system to a backup file

2. Renamed software to a backup file

I replaced the system / software hive by:

3. Copying C:\windows\system32\config\regback\software C:\windows\system32\config\software

4. Copying C:\windows\system32\config\regback\system C:\windows\system32\config\system

Restarted the server.

The server is running but not patched. Any ideas on how to fix this? This is not happening on the other 2016 IIS servers that I have. Thank You.

    Hello

Thank you for your question and reaching out. I can understand you are having query\issues related to BSOD after windows update.

    1. Review the stop error code that you find in the event logs. Search online for the specific stop error codes to see whether there are any known issues, resolutions, or workarounds for the problem
    2. Please try Debug dump file using Debugger.
    3. Disable any Antivirus program or Windows firewall you may have for temporary purpose.
    4. Try to Install update manually from https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Home.aspx
