Installing mssql in Ubuntu 22.04

Hi all,

Is mssql server installation is supported in Ubuntu 22.04 officially as of today.

If yes would someone please provide the steps?. I followed other threads but could not succeed till now.

I am using Ubuntu ~~20.04~~ 22.04 and I get the same issue.

mssql-server : Depends: libldap-2.4-2 but it is not installable

you need to use libldap-common instead.

here is the result when I try command sudo apt install libldap-2.4-2

Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree... Done Reading state information... Done Package libldap-2.4-2 is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source However the following packages replace it: libldap-common E: Package 'libldap-2.4-2' has no installation candidate

Yeah, I see now that my Ubuntu is 22.04 version. I need to install any version of mssql-server to my Ubuntu 22.04 . So, I need to use docker container... Such a shame...

Another point about this topic is that; althought Docker Desktop is available now for Linux, the documentation for Docker containers usage is only talking about how to do that with Docker Engine. So, please refresh your documentation.

And you really need to switch to libldap-common in order to make mssql-server available for latest LTS version of Ubuntu, which is 22.04 now. Follow the latest standards, not the old ones...

just follow this link , the problem needs you to manually install the missing dependencies

but before you waste your time with my post , type the following to make sure you are missing ldap and another library, i forgot the name

ldd /opt/mssql/bin/sqlservr

HI,

Thanks for the responses. There are few problems while following the link.

The link says to installation steps for 20.04 and not for 22.04.

Considering the steps will work in 22.04 i followed and got the errors when i executed sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get install -y mssql-server

error is as below:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

mssql-server : Depends: libldap-2.4-2 but it is not installable

E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

This tried before also and stuck with this error.

This isn't an official statement!

I would suggest that installing the latest version of SQL Server on the latest Ubuntu system won't break any requirements; maybe just the documentation is missing this newest Ubuntu version (docs teams maybe has a backlog).

Installation procedure... as with the older version... follow the normal Ubuntu description:

Have you considered installing Microsoft SQL Server as a Docker container?

The footprint of this container is just as much as the settings set in the Docker runtime.

Deployment can also be established as part of the Azure IoT Edge offering.

In your case, Azure IoT is used solely to distribute docker containers (including this SQL Server container) at scale.

As an alternative to the SQL Server container, Microsoft also offers SQL Edge, a SQL Server optimized for TimeSeries data.

Hi,

My current requirement is to install mssql server in ubuntu 22.04.

So docker solution may not work for me.

Hello @Swain, Rajesh Kumar,

With Moby, you can run Docker containers on Ubuntu 22.04. This runtime is made open-source.

Without pushing this, have you considered running containers on Ubuntu 22.04 (LTS) in general?

You can try the following command to install the missing package:

sudo apt install libldap-2.4-2

Ubuntu 22.04

But for questions about the official documentation not mentioning versions above 20.04, you can ask them here.
