i chatgpt the problem, it asked me a wsl --unregister. Now all my directories before I run this command is gone. Is there a way to get them back, they are extremely important to me!

This problem can be easily resolved by:

Open an Administrator PowerShell or Command Prompt window.

Run the wsl.exe --update command.

Rebooting your laptop or desktop will resolve the problem if you can access your default WSL distro after running wsl.exe once more.

Alternatively, you can use the command wsl.exe --update --rollback to rollback the kernel version and create a functioning subsystem.
