We would like run msgraph from a Azure Automation runbook with managed service account.

$subscriptionID = "#########"
$uamiID ="###########"
Connect-AzAccount -Identity -AccountId $uamiID
Set-AzContext -Subscription $subscriptionID

# Connect to the Graph SDK endpoint using the automation account
Connect-MgGraph -ClientID $Connection.ApplicationId -TenantId $Connection.TenantId -CertificateThumbprint $Connection.CertificateThumbprint

We are getting this when trying to run it

Cannot bind argument to parameter 'ClientId' because it is null.
System.Management.Automation.ParameterBindingValidationException: Cannot bind argument to parameter 'ClientId' because it is null.

System.Management.Automation.ParameterBindingValidationException: Cannot validate argument on parameter 'Subscription'. The argument is null or empty. Provide an argument that is not null or empty, and then try the command again. ---> System.Management.Automation.ValidationMetadataException: The argument is null or empty. Does anyone know what to proper permissions need to be set up on this? The managed service account has contributor access.

    Hi,

The error message attached is generated because when the Connect-MgGraph cmdlet is called it references the $Connection variable which is not declared, therefore it is null valued. When the cmdlet is used as Connect-MgGraph -ClientID $Connection.ApplicationId -TenantId $Connection.TenantId -CertificateThumbprint $Connection.CertificateThumbprint it expects Application identifiers, and for this an Azure AD App registration would be necessary.

According to the documentation's delegated access chapter, access token can be used for authentication. To get the access token you can use the Get-AzAccessToken -ResourceTypeName MSGraph cmdlet. For example:

    ## Original code for authentication towards Azure
    $subscriptionID = "#########"
    $uamiID ="###########"
    Connect-AzAccount -Identity -AccountId $uamiID
    Set-AzContext -Subscription $subscriptionID

    # Requesting Access Token for the current context for Graph
    $AccessToken = Get-AzAccessToken -ResourceTypeName MSGraph
    # Connecting to Graph with acquired token
    Connect-MgGraph -AccessToken $AccessToken.Token

    BR,

    Peter
