Azure Virtual Machine Scale Set automatic OS image upgrades

Question

I could not find proper information about automatic OS image upgrades but are they performed every mouth and what kinda changes there are usually? I read that if automatic OS image upgrades is enabled on scale set, an extra patching process through Windows Update is not required so that indicates that Windows OS update are at least part of that. If this is the case how long does it take to start those OS image upgrade so when could I expected getting new patches if they are released every 2nd Tuesday?
