Backup restore failed on new phone - 'your backup is not stored with this email'

I have been unable to restore my Authenticator backup to my new android phone. I get an error message of 'your backup is not stored with this email'. I know there is a backup as I checked prior to wiping the old android phone to pass it on to it's next owner. I have no other personal accounts where the backup could be stored. I have rebooted the phone, cleared memory and cache and reinstalled the app numerous times. I know this has been raised previously but I have not seen a solution. any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
