SP2013 - Creating new document from template error: Value does not fall within expected range

I have a templates folder at the top level site which I then use for content type document templates on all sites below. I get an error of a Runtime Error and sometimes it returns Failed to create the File with correlation ID. Looking at the logs it says "Application error when access /_layouts/15/CreateNewDocument.aspx, Error=Value does not fall within the expected range".
I'm currently using Edge Chromium and it's not working however in IE it does work as it opens in Word client instead OWA. I have tried changing the default behaviour to use client and it's still not working.

I've also tried putting one of the template docs on a subsite and linking this to a content type within the same site and it opens in OWA no problem.

Can you help with what the issue is here?

Thanks

Per my understanding, this error occurs only when you are trying to create a new document via OWA using a templated located in the parent site.

I can reproduce this issue in my test environment. The document gets created in IE11 but returns “Failed to create the file” error in other browsers, which uses OWA to create new documents by default since they lack the “SharePoint OpenDocuments Class manage” add-on. The document works as expected in all browsers and OWA after creation.
Also I have found another post suggesting the same issue with OWA: Office Web App Failed to Create a file using Parent site document template in subsite.

It seems to the default behavior/known issue in OWA.
I would suggest you change the document templates source to the same site level to avoid this error, if you need to use browsers other than IE.

Try installing the latest CU and then give it a try.
