We're trying to obtain about 15 licenses for Citrix DaaS VDA Windows 10 pro. Users bring their own devices and connect to VDA through Citrix thin client. What kind of license should we be obtaining ? Windows VDA /user or Windows VDA/device? Thanks,

    Hi UN

You should be obtaining Windows VDA/user licenses for your Citrix DaaS VDA Windows 10 Pro deployment. This is because your users are bringing their own devices to connect to the VDA through a Citrix thin client. With a Windows VDA/user license, each user can access the VDA from any device, as long as the device meets the minimum system requirements.

Windows VDA/device licenses are only necessary if you are providing devices to your users. In this case, you would need to purchase a Windows VDA/device license for each device.

Here are some of the benefits of using Windows VDA/user licenses for your Citrix DaaS VDA Windows 10 Pro deployment:

    • Increased flexibility: Users can access the VDA from any device, as long as the device meets the minimum system requirements.
    • Reduced costs: You only need to purchase one license for each user, regardless of how many devices they use.
    • Improved security: Users can only access the VDA with their own credentials, which helps to protect your data.

    Another explanation:

When it comes to licensing Citrix Desktop as a Service (DaaS) with Windows 10 Pro virtual desktops, there are two primary options to consider: Windows Virtual Desktop Access (VDA) User licenses and Windows VDA Device licenses. The choice between the two depends on how you want to license and allocate the licenses in your environment.

Windows VDA User licenses: With this licensing model, you would obtain a Windows VDA User license for each individual user who accesses the Citrix DaaS virtual desktops. This license is assigned to a specific user and allows them to access Windows virtual desktops from any device (including their own personal devices) that is covered by the license. This option is beneficial if your users work from multiple devices or if you have a "bring your own device" (BYOD) environment.

Windows VDA Device licenses: This licensing model involves obtaining a Windows VDA Device license for each device that will be used to access the Citrix DaaS virtual desktops. The license is assigned to a specific device, and any user who logs in to that device can access the virtual desktops. This option is suitable if you have shared devices that multiple users will be using to access the virtual desktops, such as a Citrix thin client or kiosk computers.

Considering your scenario where users bring their own devices and connect to the VDA through Citrix thin clients, it seems more appropriate to obtain Windows VDA User licenses. These licenses will allow your users to access the virtual desktops from any device they use, regardless of whether it's their personal device or a Citrix thin client. The user-based licensing model provides greater flexibility and mobility for your users.

It's important to note that licensing terms and conditions can change over time, so it's recommended to consult with a licensing specialist or reach out to Microsoft or Citrix directly to ensure you have the most up-to-date information regarding the licensing options and requirements for Citrix DaaS with Windows 10 Pro virtual desktops.
