    Hi @Emma Johnson

If you want to change the user's display name, it is divided into different account types.

Organization Account: you need to contact the administrator to change the display name in the M365 admin center.

Personal account: you can click the avatar in the upper right corner of Teams, then click the profile card to the right of the avatar, and finally click Edit name.

For the error you need to log in with a school or work email address, it may be that the client version you downloaded is wrong and you cannot log in.

If you downloaded the version of Microsoft Teams (work or school), you will need to use an organizational account instead of a personal account.

I'm late to the party here. but this doesn't answer the question at all.

I am an org admin (very new to it hough). My users want to be able to customize their display name to be a nickname... IN TEAMS ONLY. how is there no easy way to do this? Especially since it is apparent that personal account users can do whatever they want? why is there no edit button in the display name area like so so many articles say there is? If it is available in a personal account level, there is literally no reason it shouldn't be available in an organization. and if it is, there needs to be a way to find out how to do that. like I don't know, searching for display name in the teams admin center? they don't want display names globally changed for their office accounts. just in teams.

    Hi Emma,

if you are using a commercial M365 account your administrator has to change your Display Name in M365 Admin Center. Only Microsoft Teams (free) can be used with private Microsoft Accounts.
