Use Defender for Office 365 email protection with on-prem Exchange

Hello,

I have a question regarding the email protection of Defender for Office 365.

In a scenario where mail flow goes to Exchange on-prem, is it possible to use Defender for Office 365 email protection on mailboxes that are on the Exchange on-prem?

I know this is possible in an hybrid environment with the MX records pointing to Exchange Online, but what about when the MX records point to Exchange on-prem?

The mx has to point to Exchange Online to get Defender for 365 protection for on-prem mailboxes:
