Unable to add AD user in MS SQL 2019.

I did the following steps:

  1. Created a user (jarnold) in AD and provided the privileges to be a domain user and admin. Where the domain name is forward.com
  2. In my MS SQL server named mysql. I login into MS SQL Server 2019 using management studio using sql server authentication with user sa. Now If I am trying to create new Windows Login. When searching for the user (jarnold) it is not appearing and if I am trying to select the directory (From this location. It is only showing the MS SQL server name which is mysql.

Please advise. ms sql_2018.png

Welcome to Q&A Forum; this is a great place to get support, answers, and tips.

Thank you for posting your question; I'll be more than glad to help you out.

First, there is no SQL Server 2018, either 2017 or 2019 ;-)

Just from your picture and your explanation... your server doesn't look like it is domain-joined... first the server has to be a domain member to connect/select AD-Users from a domain controller.

So that's why you only can select a user from the "domain" mysql...

PS: your naming is very confusing ;-) Are you aware that there is another database product called MySQL from Oracle?

I hope my answer is helpful to you,

    Your

Unable to add AD user in MS SQL 2018.

There is no SQL Server version 2018.

When you use the GUI to add a domain user, then you have to switch the "Searchpath" from the local machine to the domain.

It's much easier/faster to add a login using plain T-SQL.
