Hi KS
To set permissions on a Windows File Server 2016 that allow a user to edit or rename a file but not delete it, you can follow these steps:
Right-click on the file or folder for which you want to set permissions and select "Properties."
In the Properties window, go to the "Security" tab.
Click on the "Advanced" button to access advanced security settings.
In the Advanced Security Settings window, click on the "Add" button to add a new permission entry.
In the "Select User or Group" dialog box, enter the name of the user or group for which you want to set the permissions and click "OK."
In the next window, you will see the added user or group in the permission entries list. Select the user or group and click on the "Edit" button.
The Permission Entry window will open. In the "Basic permissions" section, check the boxes for "Read & execute," "Write," and "List folder contents." These permissions allow the user to edit and rename the file or folder.
Uncheck the "Delete" box in the "Basic permissions" section to prevent the user from deleting the file or folder.
Click "OK" to save the changes and close the Permission Entry window.
Back in the Advanced Security Settings window, make sure the permission entry for the user or group is selected, and check the "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object" option.
Click "OK" to save the changes and close the Advanced Security Settings window.
Click "OK" in the Properties window to close it.
By following these steps, you have set permissions that allow the user or group to edit or rename the file or folder but prevent them from deleting it. Note that this method sets the permissions at the file or folder level, and these permissions will be inherited by any child objects unless explicitly modified.
