We are migrating sites from SharePoint 2019 to SharePoint Online. We have content types being heavily used. Process that I followed for initial test migration is below:

  1. Migrate few Content types(content types related to test site) in Content type hub from SharePoint 2019 to SharePoint Online. Publish all of them except one to test.
  2. Migrate Site Collection structure and content. This migrated lists/libraries along with the content to SPO.

Post this what happened is I see duplicate content types in site collection content types as below:

SharePoint Online Site Collection Content Types:

College Document content type was published after content type hub migration and before site collection migration. College Document set was published after site collection migration. Both of them behave in the same way, I see duplicates of both content types in site collection. Is this intended behavior?

sharing screenshots from different areas of SharePoint 2019 and SharePoint Online.

SharePoint Online Content type Gallery:

SharePoint 2019 Content type Hub:

SharePoint 2019 site collection content type:

Should we expect duplicity of content types? Is this expected or did we follow wrong approach? what do we need to do differently before/after migration?

In the libraries where we are using these content types, I do not see any duplicates. Is there any preferred approach for Content types migration?

Thank You!

    Hi @Raman Brar ,

I don't know your migration method, so I can't tell whether it is your migration method that is wrong. But according to the screenshots you provided, it has migrated the content types of all levels.

The content types in content Type Hub can be used in multiple site collections.

The content types in a site collection are only available in this site collection.

So when you migrate, you will migrate all over. If the content type at the site collection level is repeated. You can choose to migrate only the content type in the content type hub when migrating.
