How to Change On Prem Domain Name

We have set up Azure AD, Azure VPN and Azure Files. Because our on prem domain name is the same as our Azure AD name (and Microsoft 365) we are unable to use Azure Files on a machine joined to our local domain. I am aware that our on prem name should be unique. I think we need to change it to something like local.ourdomainname.com. The engineer that set up our Azure AD and Files, does not do this.

What should our next step be? Should we rename our domain, create a new VM as a DC and move everyone to it or something else?

First Changining a domain name is a simple task it can be a very complex process

so before doing such an action, it needs to be planned very carefully since there may be lots of workstations, servers, users, and applications that use your existing domain should be evaluated you need to create a good migration plan and this change should be worth such an effort.

It's worth noting that changing your on-premises domain name to fix the Azure Files issue might not be the best solution. Depending on your circumstances, there may be other options such as using Azure AD Domain Services (Azure AD DS) or configuring Azure Files with Azure AD DS for NTFS ACLs.
