Using Sharepoint Online to allow user to view document not download

Question

Greetings

Using Sharepoint online:

I am giving rights to let user to view the documents ( PDF )

Just want to Know when user click to view document ( PDF ) does it download on user end ? or just view in browser

Solution Required: its 80 MB document, i want only allow user to view it not download it

Hi @Mohammad Qasim ,

Per my test, under normal circumstances users with View Only permission will view documents in browser and not download them. This is the official information for the definition of view only permissions, you could refer to this article for more information about permission levels:

If the user has View Only Permissions then he will not be able to download the document. make sure you provide the View Only Permissions.

View Only: Can view pages, list items, and documents. Document types with server-side file handlers can be viewed in the browser but not downloaded.

if user view the documents , it means this file only is viewed not download on client automatically ( based on view ).

yes, that's true. He can only be viewed file will not download on client automatically.

Hi @Elsie Lu_MSFT ,

I would like to reiterate here view only is meant for the browser client will render in browser 80MB file considering this file is a newsletter published to approx. 600 users and we would like to assess that rendering file in browser would cause network impact same as downloading the file.
