Hi All,

Can I remove Azure Data Studio from SQL Server Management Studio? I see that it is available in programs and features in control panel.

Additionally, if removal is possible, does it have any impact in any on the components and functionalities of existing SQL Server?

Can anyone please provide an explanation on this?

Hi @Shuvajit Roy - yes, you can uninstall Azure Data Studio from the machine. It is installed, by default, with SSMS, and you can uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs and it will not affect SSMS or your SQL Server. Be aware that uninstalling ADS does not mean that the menu you have in the screen shot will no longer display. It will (and if you select on it, it will prompt to install ADS if it cannot find it).

Note that if you want to install SSMS without installing ADS, you can by launching the SSMS installer with the command line flag DoNotInstallAzureDataStudio=1. The database server is not affected by Azure Data Studio; those are two separate things.

I don't think a reboot of your machine is required, but if you want to be absolutely sure that there are no traces of ADS left, you may want to do that.

@Shuvajit Roy It typically doesn't require a reboot. I don't disagree with Erland's approach that a reboot after removing any application (not just ADS) is ok to do.

Thank u. The reason I want to be very sure is because I will implement it on enterprise production server. Therefore, I want to be very sure before performing the removal.

As I understand, you want to understand about removal of Azure Data Studio in SSMS.

The Release Notes of the SQL Server Management Studio states that Azure Data Studio was integrated to it from Release 18.12.1.

I understand that it is integrated Release 18.12.1, however, what i want to know is, can i remove the component Azure Data Studio without affecting the functionalities and elements of SQL Server Management Studio and SQL server?

"Azure Data Studio" and "SQL Server Management Studio" are separate tools and so separate installation; yes, you can uninstall ADStudio.
