Configure Azure Virtual Desktop Insights (Azure Monitor)

Hi All,

First of all yes I know using Azure Monitoring Agent with AVD is an in preview feature so sorry if there is not much help yet.

The issue I have is simply that I cannot configure it. The MS docs say that the Configuration workbook should allow you to create Data Collection Rules and recognise the AMA. This is not the case for me.

I have created the DCR and associated it with my Session Hosts. I can see the data is coming through to my Log Analytics workspace fine. But the Insights workbook just keeps complaining that my Session Hosts are not connected to Log Analytics.

Well, I'm using AMA so that is kind of the point . . .

I found that there is a new CheckAMAConfiguration workbook in the central MS Github site, and if I download and run this workbook it correctly notes that my Session Hosts are all good as can be seen in the screenshot. User's image

The problem is that the main Insights community workbook is not updated so it will never seem to accept that the AMA is being used. If I click into Insights for a Host Pool it just says the configuration is wrong and needs to be fixed.

Has anyone managed to get this working?

Kind Regards

James

    Hi James,

As you mentioned, this is still in preview, so it looks like the Insights dashboard and Onboarding dashboard have not been updated in the Azure portal, yet.

It sounds like you have configured AMA perf counters and event counters correctly, as per your screenshot.

I successfully used this dashboard to display AMA performance counters/events.

Once you have the above dashboard, you can check the configuration by:

    • Click "Edit" at the top of the workbook
    • Check all parameters are correct, such as the Log Analytics workspace, assignedDCR and UsingAMA should be "Yes"
    • After you click "done editing" at the top, you should be able to navigate the workbook and see your data

One thing to note, I did need to double check that my Data collection rule was setup correctly. Please check that the performance counters are ingesting into the Log analytics workspace which is used by the workbook.

Eventually, the built in workbooks for AVD Insights and onboarding should be updated with this AMA data, but for now, as it is still in Preview, you can test by verifying the above.

In my example, I also made sure the log analytics workspace was not using legacy Performance counters using the old agent, to ensure it was definitely AMA which was ingesting this data.

If you need more help with this or anything explaining in more detail, please let me know

    Thanks
