How to stop windows update ? every week (At least once a week, and sometimes more) windows does its update. It takes down a required machine each time. When the machine comes back up, I have to go thru the "Setup My Computer" all over again. This has been happening for at least a year. Each time windows does an update, I have to start all over again. This is one of many critical machines. I cannot get the darn thing to stop. I have asked Microsoft community many many times, with no results. I have taken to writing a "Watchdog" service to stop these Microsoft bad behaviors. That is working 100%. I have expanded it to stop AI.exe as well as a bunch of other Microsoft issues.

Has anybody had any success stopping windows updates ?

    Hi, @Robin Ganderton

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Q&A forum.

If you are experiencing issues with Windows Updates causing your machine to crash and go through the "Setup My Computer" process each time, it is not recommended to fully disable updates as this can leave your machine vulnerable to security threats. However, there are some steps you can take to resolve the issue.

One possible solution is to configure the Windows Update settings to install updates outside of working hours so that updates do not disrupt work time. This can be done by editing the Group Policy Settings or by configuring the settings in the Windows Update screen. You can also disable certain types of updates such as driver updates, or pause updates for up to 35 days. However, these options may not be available for all versions of Windows.

    Windows key +R

    enter services.msc

    Double click windows update

In the drop box labeled startup type chose disabled.

    Click stop button

    click okay

*Note turning of automatic updates is not advised.
