Outlook: Receiving reported error (0x800CCC1A)

When sending/receiving email, I will get an error that says "Receiving reported error (0x800CCC1A): Your server does not support the connection encryption type you have specified. Try changing the encryption method. Contact your mail server administrator or internet service provider (ISP) for additional assistance."

I am currently running the latest version of Outlook via Office 365. This error has been happening for more than a year. I do not believe the problem is with the settings, my mail server, or my ISP because if I reboot my machine, I will be able to send and receive mail without issue. The problem only manifests itself approximately 8 to 12 hours after the computer has been rebooted. I have tried running the repair from the control panel, and uninstalled and reinstalled, but the error continues to occur. Is this a known issue? I am unable to find anything in the knowledge base on it. While it may seem easy enough to just reboot, I am really getting tired of it, and if I can't find a fix, I am going to finally cut bait and look for other options, as much as I do not want to. Any suggestions are welcome.

    Hi @Dennis Hahn ,

    Welcome to our forum!

What's the type of your account? (POP/Exchange/IMAP)

"Receiving reported error (0x800CCC1A): Your server does not support the connection encryption type you have specified. Try changing the encryption method. Contact your mail server administrator or internet service provider (ISP) for additional assistance."

According to the error, i notice that the issue may be related to connection encryption. If you are using IMAP/POP account, please check and confirm you have configured your account correctly: POP, IMAP, and SMTP settings.

Based on the above, i notice that the issue disappears briefly after restarting the computer. In order to further confirm if the issue is related to your current Outlook desktop client, please configure your account on other computer to check if there're any differences.

If everything is ok on other computer, considering that it may be caused by the damage of the profile/data file in the Outlook client, it is suggested that you could try to create a new profile(Control Panel>Mail>Show Profiles>add) and add the account for testing to check if there are some differences.

If the issue persists, considering the impact of some add ins, It is suggested that you try to start outlook in safe mode(win+R>type: outlook /safe) to check whether it works normally.

If the above doesn't help, considering the impact of some third-party programs on your computer, please try to perform a clean boot for windows and check if the issue still occurs.

Thank you for the suggestions. I have verified that the email server settings are correct, and they should be since everything works fine right after I reboot. I do have Outlook setup on another computer in the house and it works just fine, albeit it is using a different email address. However the only difference in the setup is the user name as the email server and all the settings are identical. I tried setting up a brand new email profile using the steps outlined above and I purposely waited until after my computer had been running and the regular profile stopped connecting. Even though I started with a fresh email profile, from scratch, the profile was unable to connect to receive email, and I received the exact same error as before. I did try starting in safe mode and again, got the 0X800CCC1A error. I suppose the problem could be some sort of interaction with the third party programs I have installed, but I use this computer almost exclusively for schoolwork, so besides the O365 apps, there are only two or three non-preinstalled software on this machine. So unfortunately, at this point I think I may just make the switch to an email suite that actually works.

Try changing the SMTP port to 465
