Unable to install updates (0x800705B4). Unable to rename catroot2. DISM errors out. SFC /scannow errors out (Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service). Defender unable to start unable to start because its missing files (0x80070002). I'm pretty sure its all connected somehow, I'm just not sure where to start. Its an Azure VM so I cant exactly see the physical machine. I'd like to boot into safe mode but not sure I can get back into it.

    Hi @Shaun Healy ADM

In order to better solve the problem, I need to know more information:

    • What are you trying to update, manually or automatically?

    URL for manual update: https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Home.aspx

    • What is the KB number of the update package you want to install?
    • Error 0x800705B4 is related to Windows defender. Have any third-party antivirus software and firewall temporarily disable them and make sure Windows firewall is turned on.
    • Make sure the Windows Defender service is enabled.

    Hope the information is helpful.
