Hello,

I have configured a VM backup. Both VM and Recovery Services Vault are in the same region.

Please refer the screenshot in which it is showing the sub task "Take Snapshot" got completed in 7 minutes and 38 seconds, where as the sub task "Transfer data to vault" took 3 hours 33 minutes and 35 seconds to transfer 756 MB of data.

My question is what is the reason behind "transfer data to vault" task took so long for relatively small amount of data. What are the factors which needs to be taken into consideration while configuring a backup which can reduce the time it takes to complete the whole backup process.

Please reply for any query.

Thank you in advance.

    Hi,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

It doesn't seem to be an abnormal behavior. Usually 'transfer data to vault' tasks does take much time to complete the backup hence it is advised to be scheduled at off-business hours. In the background the 'transfer' task takes and compares the checksum before proceeding with the backup, hence the time taken will be high.

See supporting information in the below link.

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/backup/backup-azure-vm-backup-faq#does-azure-backup-interfere-with-application-performance

Data transfer Consider the time needed for Azure Backup to identify the incremental changes from the previous backup. In an incremental backup, Azure Backup determines the changes by calculating the checksum of the block. If a block is changed, it's marked for transfer to the vault. The service analyzes the identified blocks to attempt to further minimize the amount of data to transfer. After evaluating all the changed blocks, Azure Backup transfers the changes to the vault. There might be a lag between taking the snapshot and copying it to vault. At peak times, it can take up to eight hours for the snapshots to be transferred to the vault. The backup time for a VM will be less than 24 hours for the daily backup.
