    Hello @Menta Elise

The "Software Updates deployment evaluation cycle" triggers in the background the Windows Update agent to scan with the Software Update point the updates, which SU is installed/missing, then the WUA starts the deployment of missing updates within the deployment parameters configured.

how often does it run, and when should it be executed manually?

By default, this scan uses a simple schedule to start every seven days, you can customize it under Client Settings > Software Updates. But sometimes, for troubleshooting purpose, you may need to run it manually from the Configuration Manager from the Control Panel.

    Hi, @Menta Elise

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Q&A forum.

The "Software Updates Deployment Evaluation Cycle" in SCCM Client Control Panel is used to evaluate deployed software updates on client computers. When this cycle is initiated, the client scans for software updates, re-downloads the updates that were not installed before, and installs the updates that meet the defined evaluation criteria. By default, a "Software Updates Deployment Evaluation Cycle" is initiated every seven days on the client computer. However, the reevaluation cycle can be configured in the Software Updates page in client settings for the site.

You should execute a "Software Updates Deployment Evaluation Cycle" manually in the following scenarios:

When you need to manually check whether the required updates that were previously installed are still installed on the client system.

When a specific update has been deployed, and you want to ensure that it is getting downloaded to the client.
