Desktop notifications opening in new window instead of main window

When I click a desktop notification for a new chat, the message opens in a new window. How can I change the settings so that clicking the notification opens the message in the main teams window instead of opening a new window? I had it configured this way in the past but I can't figure out how to change it back in the new teams preview

I have basically the same question, only it's regarding Files. All my files open in Onenote and I don't want it to. I need everything to open in the desktop app. This began when I started using the NEW Teams. I never had this problem in the previous version. I right click to Open in App (which I never had to do before), everything opens in Onenote. Please help!!

This is an old question, but for those who stumble upon this - the way to change it back to how it was, i.e. clicking on notification opening the main Teams window:

In Teams, click on ... in the top menu (next to your photo/initials) and then on Settings. In General section, look under "Opening content in Teams Windows" and make sure "Main window" is selected. That should do it.

What kind of pop out chat?

If it's the bottom right corner that shows this notification pop-up below, select Setting, and then choose Turn off all notifications for Microsoft Teams (work preview).

But I don't want to disable the notifications. I just want them to open the chat in the main window when I click on them, instead of opening in a separate window.

Based on your provided information, we did a test in our environment, and we can also reproduce your steps. Could you check if our result is the same as yours?

Before these steps, the “open new chat in” settings is “main window” and if we click the notification, chat window will show the main window. However, after we did the following steps, things were changed.

Step 1: Open Teams Setting, Select Open new chat in under General ,and then choose New window.

Step 2: Open in a new window when a new message is received.

But when I tried again to change it to main window in the settings, it didn't take effect and the new message was still shown in new window.

When I click on a conversation from the main window works fine but when I try it clicking the notification, it opens a new window no matter the new chat setting

I tested it and got the same result as you. If so, I guess it's designed by Teams.

To get this feature more quickly, we recommend you give the feedback in Teams UserVoice. Many features of our current products are designed and upgraded based on customers’ feedback. With requirements like this increase, the problem may well be released in the future.
