Busy with a project that will entail migrating from Exchange 2016 to office 365. The exchange server will be retired.

Have a server 2019 standard as a terminal server. Primary purpose of this server is for users to access accounting package. Older version of office is also installed, and this version of office is not compatible with exchange online. Users accessing the terminal server also have outlook setup loaded and they can access their mails and shared mailboxes.

From a 365-subscription plan it will be a mixture of 365 standard and basic.

I was planning on outright purchase of office that support exchange 2016 and office 365 to install on the terminal server.

For my question.

  • Will outright purchase support shared setup?
  • What office would you recommend for the terminal that still supports exchange and office 365?
  • How will the setup work do I need an xml file for shared computing?
  • In the event all the users accessing terminal server have 365 business standard will that support licensing on the terminal server.

Can also assist with the xml file if possible.

To use shared computer activation, you need an Office 365 (or Microsoft 365) plan that includes Microsoft 365 Apps and also supports shared computer activation. Shared computer activation is available for the following plans:

    • Any plan that includes Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise. For example, Office 365 E3 or Microsoft 365 E5.
    • Any plan that includes the desktop version of Project or Visio. For example, Project Plan 3 or Visio Plan 2.
    • The Microsoft 365 Business Premium plan, which includes Microsoft 365 Apps for business.

However, it's worth noting that Microsoft 365 Apps is supported on the following versions of Windows Server until the dates specified:

    • Windows Server 2016: October 2025
    • Windows Server 2019: October 2025
    • Windows Server 2022: October 2026
