Incorrect username password remote desktop connection between two pcs with same microsoft account

Good morning,

I just formatted two computers connected in the same home network with fixed dhcp addresses.

Both the two pcs have windows 11 installed with the same Microsoft account entered.

The problem is that it won't let me access the remote desktop, from both pc's, because it says the password and username are wrong.

Same thing if I try to access the respective c: disks.

How can I solve this?

Thanks for the help

    Hello there,

When trying to establish a remote desktop connection between two PCs using the same Microsoft account, you might encounter issues with incorrect username or password if certain settings are not configured correctly. Here are some common reasons for this problem and their potential solutions:

Network Connectivity: Ensure that both PCs are connected to the same network and can communicate with each other. If there are any network issues, it can result in login failures.

Windows Firewall: Check the Windows Firewall settings on both PCs. The firewall may be blocking the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) traffic, preventing the connection. Make sure that the necessary ports (TCP port 3389 by default) are open for RDP.

Remote Desktop Enabled: On the target PC (the one you want to connect to), make sure that remote desktop connections are allowed. To enable Remote Desktop, go to "Settings" > "System" > "Remote Desktop" and turn on "Enable Remote Desktop."

User Account Permission: Ensure that the Microsoft account you are using to connect has the necessary permissions to access the remote PC. The user account must be added to the "Remote Desktop Users" group or have administrator privileges on the remote PC.

Hope this resolves your Query !!

    To add to the above...

I had quite a few cases of this and when the above did not resolve, I found the following worked:

    • Close your apps and log off
    • At the login screen, instead of using Hello (fingerprint, PIN, Security Key), click on "Sign in options"
    • Click on the icon for "Microsoft Account Password" and enter that password - the one you use to log onto MS365 apps, etc.
    • Now try Remote Desktop Connection using your Microsoft account credentials.
    • Should now be able to connect to that machine going forward. This one-time password login seems to make the password 'active' in some way.

note: after using this Microsoft Account Password to logon once, you can go back to using Hello going forward.
