weird boxes around my text in Word

Hi. In the middle of editing my document, these strange boxes - with three dots at the upper corner - have appeared out of nowhere, and really impede my ability to edit. Really frustrating [i.e. it's driving me nuts!]! Any help resolving this issue will be very much appreciated! [PS - the option "display text borders" in not enabled...] How do I get rid of them? they weren't there before!!
