Current DFSR global state: "Start"

Hi everyone,

Good afternoon. I hope you can help. I just start this new job a month ago.

There are two domain controllers running in Windows 2012r2 in this domain. They are still running in 2008r2 AD schema. I am planning to upgrade their AD and domain controllers. To add new DC running with W2016 or higher, I know that I need to migrate the FRS to DFSR.

I have not run anything yet to proceed with the migration but just check the state by running the command "dfsrmig /getglobalstate" . I got "Current DFSR global state: 'Start'. Succeed"

I would expect the "dfsr migration has not been initialized yet" or something like that. But why it is in "Start" state? If this is the case, what do I need to do to perform the migration?

Also, while my servers are not in known state, I should not raise the domain from 2008r2 to 2012r2 before running the dfsr migration?

Hope you can help. Thank you in advance.

I would not make any changes until you have verified domain health is 100% by checking dcdiag, repadmin results plus confirm the **System **and FRS Replication event logs are free of errors.

If all this looks good then yes you could complete the migration.

Can I change the schema from 2008r2 to 2012r2?

I'll assume you meant the domain function level? Again I would not make changes here either until you confirm a stable state.

Hi Dave, thank you again. When I run "dfsrmig /getglobalstate" . I got "Current DFSR global state: 'Start'.

Do you think if the migration state was already started by someone already?

Or can I start to do the migration by running all the commands need from the beginning (that I will run into different state when running each dfsrmig commands like start, prepared... elimnated)?

    Please advise, thank you.

HI Dave, thank you for your response. Thank you... I would like to clarify my question and ask little further....

When I run "dfsrmig /getglobalstate" . I got "Current DFSR global state: 'Start'.Do you think if someone has already start the migration process but did not complete it? Ff the answer is "yes" I will not change the schema. But which step/command of the migration I should run next?

However, if the answer to the above question is "NO" no one starts the migration yet, Can I change the schema from 2008r2 to 2012r2?

    Thank you very much again!

I would not make any changes until the migration is complete. By the way 2016 can still use FRS

The two prerequisites to introducing the first 2019 or 2022 domain controller are that domain functional level needs to be 2008 or higher and older sysvol FRS replication needs to have been migrated to DFSR
