We are a reseller. One of our clients wants to upgrade their Standard 2012 R2 to 2016 for now. They have an app that will soon only support 2016 or higher but they can't afford a new server now.

We know our distributor provides downloads and Product Keys for 2022, 2019 and 2016.

The question is, in a year or so, our client says they'll be able to purchase a new physical server and wants to know if we can use the 2019/2022 Product Keys legally with this one order, or will they need to purchase a new Windows Server 2022 Standard again.

Thanks in advance.

You'll need to ask microsoft for an "official" answer but as long as the downgrade instance goes away, I think it should be fine.
