Good Day,

I install our PoS System via a PXE server and PrePrepped Images. What I need to know and battle to find the answer for is if you can run/install Windows 10 Enterprise IoT 21H2 on a machine that has a Windows 10 Enterprise IoT 2019 License.

This will determine if I can replace my current POS image or need to make two images for newer and older machines.

You need to get a Windows 10 Enterprise IoT 21H2 runtime key and license sticker. Please contact a Microsoft distributor for more information.

    Hello Marius,

Thank you for your question and for reaching out with your question today.

The ability to upgrade from Windows 10 Enterprise IoT 2019 to Windows 10 Enterprise IoT 21H2 depends on the specific licensing terms and upgrade policies set by Microsoft. Generally, if you have an active Software Assurance (SA) agreement with Microsoft, you may be eligible for free upgrades to newer versions of Windows during the term of your SA agreement.

However, it's essential to note that Windows 10 Enterprise IoT editions are typically sold through volume licensing channels, and the licensing terms may vary based on the agreement you have with Microsoft or your licensing reseller.

Here are some steps you can take to determine if you can upgrade from Windows 10 Enterprise IoT 2019 to Windows 10 Enterprise IoT 21H2:

    1. Check your Licensing Agreement: Review the specific terms of your volume licensing agreement or any other licensing agreements with Microsoft to see if there are any upgrade benefits or entitlements.
    2. Contact Microsoft or Your Licensing Reseller: If you are unsure about your licensing rights or eligibility for upgrades, it's best to contact Microsoft directly or consult with your licensing reseller. They can provide you with the most accurate and up-to-date information based on your specific licensing agreement.
    3. Review Microsoft's Official Documentation: Check Microsoft's official documentation and guidelines for Windows 10 Enterprise IoT editions to see if there are any announcements or updates regarding upgrade options.
    4. Test Upgrade Scenarios: If you have a test environment, consider testing the upgrade from Windows 10 Enterprise IoT 2019 to Windows 10 Enterprise IoT 21H2 to see if it works and if your license is recognized properly.

Remember that licensing compliance is essential, especially in business environments. Ensure that you have the appropriate licensing rights before performing any upgrades or installations.

If you find that you need to support both older and newer machines with different versions of Windows 10 Enterprise IoT, you may need to create separate images for each version to ensure compliance and compatibility.
