A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Framework Microsoft SqlClient Data Provider)

Firstly check the network protocols from configuration manager. Tcp/ip must be enabled. Secondly check firewall. If it is active, allow SQL server port 1433 or disable the firewall.

Yes, this is the standard error you get when you don't reach the SQL Server instance you are trying to connect to. Possible reasons include:

    • Fat-fingering server/instance name.
    • SQL Server is not running.
    • SQL Server is not installed at all (only SSMS will not give you anything.)
    • SQL Server not configured for remote connections (when you try to connect to an instance not on your own machine).
    • The Browser service not running.
    • Firewalls blocking the way.

Since you don't say why you expect connection to work, we cannot help you further. But you can follow this troubleshooter.
