Can help to advise whether ******@email.microsoft.com is legit email from Microsof?

Well, how about the email address ******@email2.microsoft.com ?

In addition, I would like to know, whether an email domain is defined or determined

simply by the fact, that the last portion of it contains "microsoft.com".

In other words: Is the whole item " @email2.microsoft.com " considered to be the domain,

or is only the portion "microsoft.com " the domain. Looking for clarity.

You see, if I receive, for example an email from ******@happyhacker.microsoft.com, would you then still say that "To your knowledge this is a legit email address" ?

Personally, from long experience, often enough I can rely only on the fact, that I "don't know something". Some things are true 99% of the time, others 90%, 80%, 50%, down to an 8% chance of rain. When it comes to the software industry, a promise that something "is supposed to work" is nowadays in the low 30% range. Too many lawyers, marketing, finance, statistic experts, and CEO's have their hand in everything, so the general trust level towards software geniuses has been going down, down, down since about the early 1990's.

So, when someone says: "To my knowledge, ... " this is not very reassuring, because I do not know "how great, how complete and how up-to-date" your knowledge really is.

To my knowledge this is a legit email address.

While to confirm whether it is phishing, you can check the message header for more information.

How to check message header in Outlook: View internet message headers in Outlook

If there are suspicious parts, for example the sending server is not Microsoft servers (***.outlook.com) , or the Reply-To address mismatches the From address, better ignore or report this email.
