From the settings in the distribution list, there is these options:

Open: Anyone can join this group without being approved by the group owners.
Closed: Members can be added only by the group owners. All requests to join will be rejected automatically.
Owner approval: All requests are approved or rejected by the group owners.

I would like the owners to receive requests and be able to approve or reject them, so I selected Owner Approval. But I am not sure how will a user request to be added to a mailing list in the first place. Could you please help me understand how that works?

Thanks.

The experience will depend not only on the group settings, but on the tenant configuration as well. By default, end users are able to manage their DG membership via OWA settings, so assuming you haven't made any changes to the default configuration, the user can open OWA > Settings > General > Distribution groups and adjust his membership. If the group has open membership, the user joins it right away. If an ownership approval is required, pressing the Join button effectively submits a request to the owner.
