Sharepoint 2019 on-premise constant login prompts in MS Edge

Recently upgraded to SharePoint Server 2019 from 2013 Foundation. All seems to be working ok in Chrome, but when in Edge we can only log in using DOMAIN\username format, otherwise we get constant login prompts. If you cancel the prompt it gives a 401 error.

Note that we log into Windows via local domain AD authentication. The SharePoint Server is on an external domain. However, both ourselves and external users are having the same issue with Edge, but I don't know the external users local authentication setup.

We authenticate via Claims NTLM.

We have tried disableloopbackcheck in the registry.

When logging in with the DOMAIN\username format, some functionality of the websites are lost, such as clicking on Edit Page or Site Settings being unresponsive.

I hope I've provided enough info, but please ask if I'm missing anything.

Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello,

The issue you are experiencing with constant login prompts in Microsoft Edge after upgrading to SharePoint Server 2019 from SharePoint 2013 Foundation is likely related to browser settings and authentication methods. Here are some troubleshooting steps to resolve the problem:

Browser Settings: Check the browser settings in Microsoft Edge to ensure that cookies and JavaScript are enabled. SharePoint relies on cookies and JavaScript for authentication and functionality, so disabling them could lead to login issues.

Intranet Zone Settings: Add your SharePoint site to the "Local Intranet" zone in Edge. This can be done by going to "Settings" > "Site permissions" > "Intranet" and adding the SharePoint site URL.

Compatibility View: Try enabling or disabling Compatibility View in Edge. Sometimes, enabling Compatibility View can resolve authentication and rendering issues with SharePoint.

Credential Manager: Clear any stored credentials related to your SharePoint site in the Windows Credential Manager. This will ensure that you start fresh with the correct credentials.

Edge Updates: Ensure that you have the latest updates for Microsoft Edge. An outdated browser version might have compatibility issues with modern SharePoint sites.

Windows Update: Check for Windows updates and install any available updates. Sometimes, Windows updates include fixes for browser and authentication-related issues.

Authentication Provider Order: In SharePoint Central Administration, verify the authentication provider order. Make sure that the preferred authentication provider (Claims NTLM in your case) is at the top of the list.

Check for Loopback Check: Although you mentioned you tried disabling the loopback check in the registry, double-check that the setting was applied correctly. The registry change should be made on the SharePoint server.

Alternative Browsers: If the issue persists in Edge, try accessing the SharePoint site in other browsers like Chrome or Firefox. This can help determine if the problem is specific to Edge or if it's a broader issue.

External Users: Since external users are also experiencing the same issue, it might indicate a broader problem with authentication or DNS. Consult with your network and DNS administrators to ensure that external users are able to resolve and access the SharePoint site properly.

Clear Browser Cache: Clear the browser cache in Microsoft Edge to ensure that you are not experiencing issues due to cached data.

If the issue still persists after trying these steps, consider reaching out to Microsoft support or consult with experienced SharePoint administrators who can analyze your specific configuration and provide further assistance.
