Hyper-V VM cannot ping outside of the Host

Hello all,

I've been working on a lab network attempting to perform a test live migration. Here is my current setup:

Host 1: (STAN)

  • VM (COSTELLO)

Host 2: (OLLIE) (Joined to the Domain)

  • VM (ABBOTT) (Current Domain Controller) (DNS Server)

I have set static IP addresses for all of these devices. However, from each VM I can only ping the Host that the VM is on. I can also ping the VM from the Host. My problem is that I cannot ping the opposite Host or VM from the VM I'm working with.

To make that a little easier to understand, here is an example:
STAN can Ping COSTELLO and vice-versa.
OLLIE can Ping ABBOTT and vice-versa.
OLLIE can Ping STAN and vice-versa.

COSTELLO cannot ping OLLIE or ABBOTT
ABBOTT cannot ping STAN or COSTELLO

Windows Firewall is completely disabled on all of the computers, Network Discovery is enabled on all computers. Each VM is configured with an external switch in Hyper-V Manager.

ABBOTT shows "No Internet" in the taskbar, however it can ping Google.com, ping its Host, and shows the domain name in the ncpa.cpl menu.
Just to note, STAN and COSTELLO cannot ping the DNS server or Domain on ABBOTT.

Any help or suggestions? Thanks!

    Hi,

It seems the external virtual switch does not bound to the correct physical network adapter on the host. Do you have multiple network adapters on your hosts? If yes, open Virtual Switch Manager from the right pane of the Hyper-V Manager and check the physical network adapter to which the external virtual switch bounds. If not, remove the current external virtual switch and create a new one. Make sure "Allow management operating system to share this network adapter" is checked.

    Best Regards,

    Ian Xue
