Anyone else getting persistent 'error D8040: error creating or communicating with child process' trying to build C++ DLLs with latest Visual Studio 2022 ?

A handful of the 138 libraries in my project fail to build with errors like this:
12>cl : command line error D8040: error creating or communicating with child process
This occurs after the main pass of certain TUs. Always in the same place. I've tried variations on the language specification (latest & C++ 20) and turning off multiprocessor compilation but I can't work around it.
This has only started since recent updates.
Cleans, Restarts, Reboots and Running VS as Admin have no effect.

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!

Do you mean that it builds properly before updating VS2022 to version 17.6.5?

Please open the project’s Property Pages > Configuration Properties > C/C++ > Language > modify the Open MP Support property to No.

And use the same way to turn off all optimizations: Configuration Properties > C/C++ > Optimization.

You can also try to repair your VS2022 with Visual Studio Installer.

This is fixed in 17.6.7 and I'm happy to close the issue. I'd only say that anyone who's stuck on 17.6.5 or 17.6.6 should upgrade ASAP.

I'm still getting the same problem on Visual Studio 2022 17.7.1 on AMD Ryzen 9, 32gb, saying:

That looks like a real issue but a different one. I only got D8040 errors. No INTERNAL COMPILER ERROR messages. The only time I get those is when I do something with templates (or other language features) that no one ever thought of doing before they wrote the compiler, like virtual statics you can call on a null object. :-)

Get this error constantly after moving to SDK style project and .net8 with mixed mode with UI in C#, C++/Cli for glue, and real work in C++ . Goes away when disabling parallel compiling, but to slow to use like that. None of above suggestions fix the issue. Also debugging in C++ in mixed mode is horrendously slow now. Studio and tools fully updated to 17.9. Was forced to moved ap back to 4.8 for foreseeable future to be able to keep developing.
