IF your presentation is running from a local hard drive and you can keep your images in the same folder as the presentation, all you need to do (assuming Windows, not Mac) is click the v arrow next to the INSERT button when you're adding your images and choose to either Link or Link & Embed. The latter is more robust.
When PPT opens your file, it'll check to see if the image file has changed and if so, will update it in your presentation.
This doesn't seem to work with files stored on OneDrive/SharePoint though.
