Hyper-V - Disk chain corruption, no option to reconnect

Hello,

One of my VM's will not start and gives the typical chain corruption message. When I inspect the disk, it says it's fine and there's no option to reconnect. I am unable to start the VM and there is important data on it.

Any ideas?

    Hello there,

This can happen because of hardware problem like storage LUN going full and pause, third party backup software trying to backup a full VM while failing over and over causing detached out of sync snapshots and broken disk chains.

Is there anything in event viewer?

I would suggest you to use proc mon to identify if there is nothing on the event viewer.

If your virtual machine had snapshots, these snapshots can sometimes cause disk chain corruption. Try to merge or delete any snapshots that might exist.

Open the Hyper-V Manager and right-click on the virtual machine. Go to "Settings" and examine the disk configuration. Ensure that all disks are correctly attached and the paths are accurate.

Hope this resolves your Query !!

    Hi,

It sounds the virtual disk file is corrupted. Can you provide the specific error message? You can attach the vhdx file to another VM in Hyper-V manager or directly to the VM host in disk management and see if you can read data from the attached virtual disk.

    Best Regards,
