I bought my laptop from a pawn shop. When I got it home to setup, it had me login to my educator account for access to Microsoft 365. I didn't think much of it since I am a teacher and have a free Microsoft 365 account as such. Thank you for that, by the way. Now it says that update settings are controlled by my organization. However, it's a personal laptop. Will this affect my usability/ownership rights? Do I need to buy a new license for Windows 10?

    Hi,

Yes if you logged in with your Organisation or Uni account the settings will be managed by the owner of the tenant, so the best option is to buy a personal license if you want it to use for personal use. Family plan is most common to use as you can use on multiple devices - https://www.microsoft.com/en-GB/microsoft-365/buy/compare-all-microsoft-365-products

    Hope this helps.
