Obtain error information when exporting Mailbox

Scenario:

  • M365 Platform
  • Shared Mailbox
  • I and others have Full Access to the Shared Mailbox

The aim is to export the content of the mailbox to PST, delete and re-create the mailbox afresh then import the content to address a number of issues with the mailbox.

Issue

I have a tenant that has a mailbox that the business owner had been tinkering with while he was trying to "administer" his M365 environment. When I try to rename/move/delete subfolders in the mailbox it generates an "unspecified error" and when I connect to it using OLK, and try to export the entire mailbox, I get the same error.

I have gone thru every folder in the mailbox and manually granted me 'Mailbox Owner' permissions (a couple of hundred) and still get "unspecified error" when an export is attempted.

I have just used eDiscovery / Content Search to try an alternate method and it seems to have frozen.

Questions:

  1. Where can I view any errors produced by the eDiscovery process?
  2. Given export to PST via Powershell is no longer possible how do we export the content so that the mailbox can be recreated
  3. Event log on the local workstation when I use OLK to attempt the export has no information that aids diagnosis, what are my options

    Hi @Shane King,

Just wondering what search conditions you use to search mailboxes?

I recommend that you check the mailbox usage by the shared mailbox under Recipients-Mailboxes to compare whether the size is the same.

And, according to my research, there is no other way to view search status in eDiscovery other than search statistics.

    Hello @Shane King

You can license the account and convert to a regular mailbox. Add the account on Outlook app and export to PST.

Once the process is completed, you can unlicense the account, delete and recreate
