Previously I used to "Create Custom Model" in oai.azure.com, why can't I use it now? How to get user permissions?

Rootverse META Greetings & Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum!

Previously I used to "Create Custom Model" in oai.azure.com, why can't I use it now? How to get user permissions?

I understand that you are unable to create a customized model in the Azure OpenAI studio.

This could happen for few reasons. Either your access level permissions are limited or fine-tuning is not available.

Since you are able to create earlier and if you are seeing the option is greyed out, I would suggest you check the access level permissions once incase if anything is changed.

First check if you have the "Cognitive Services OpenAI Contributor" role is enabled or not. If not, follow the below steps.

To enable "Cognitive Services OpenAI Contributor" role, Goto Azure Open AI resource in Azure Portal -> Access control (IAM) -> Add role assignment --> Select "Cognitive Services OpenAI Contributor" role and assign.

Please see below for more clarity.

Once you have added the role assignment, you will be able to see this under View My access tab.

Also, User needs to be a reader at the Subscription level and should have Cognitive Services OpenAI Contributor on the resource level to work.

Please see https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/role-based-access-control/built-in-roles#cognitive-services-openai-contributor for more details regarding different roles.

Incase if you are trying for fine-tuning:
Fine tuning is currently not available for new customers as it is turned off for all regions. Unfortunately, we don't have any ETA at this moment when fine tuning opens again.

The models page will be updated as soon as we open up regions for fine tuning and users should be able to submit the requests when it is made available.

If you have previously fine-tuned & deployed in a region, then you can fine tune in that region if it's available.

Alternatively, you could use Azure OpenAI on your data feature with Open AI which might remove the need / requirement for fine tuning.

Hope this information helps. Do let me know if you have any further queries.
