Is switching from fix provisioned to serverless Azure SQL Database non-blocking

Hi,

We finally like to give the serverless-model of Azure SQL Database a try on our production system. As we have high-loads on this environment 24x7 I like to know if switching to serverless using the Azure Portal is non-blocking / 100% in-place so no DB outage will happen? Couldn't find statements about this online.

Although you may have already checked this post - https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/azure-sql/new-data-exposed-episode-switching-an-existing-azure-sql-db-from/ba-p/877778 regarding the seamless way you can shift to serverless but we are still trying to verify on our end that no outage happens.

Although that being said, it is always recommended in the any Azure Architecture to have a retry option to prevent even few seconds of resource unavailability.

Yes, I am aware of the special retry requirements of Azure SQL allthrougt we have problems fulfilling this because our software uses NHibernate and there is still no special Azure SQL driver which uses the Microsoft Azure SQL libraries and therefore fulfils all the retry codes / logic.

This and the fact that the database is und permanent traffic is why I like to have a closer and check here about the real outage while shifting from fix provisioned to serverless. I already shifted some of our reporting and testing databases. No issues there but they are not under load 24x7.

We again went to verify the outage time for the change. They have verified by checking by running it in their environment that it is not more than a blip or few seconds of outage.

But they again erred on the side of caution that first Cx need to check the same with their environment either in test or dev. Also the other thing to ensure the retry logic for such blips.
