Remote Desktop accessible locally but not when accessed via VPN

I have been using an android device to access a headless Windows 10 Pro PC on my local network successfully for some time. Unfortunately, when I connect to my local network via OpenVPN I am met with an error code 0x204. The OpenVPN host is on the router and I can connect to all other devices on the network and am able to ping the headless PC remotely so I don't think its an OpenVPN issue.

I have checked that port 3389 is open, Remote Desktop is enabled and tried temporarily turning of the Windows Firewall without success. Please can you advise any other troubleshooting steps?

Best regards

Laurie

    Hello

The error code 0x204 typically occurs when there is an issue with the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) or the network settings. Here are some additional troubleshooting steps you can try:

Check VPN Settings: Make sure your VPN is configured to allow RDP traffic. Some VPNs may block certain types of traffic for security reasons. You can also try checking the “Send all traffic over VPN connection” option in your VPN settings.

Check Network Level Authentication (NLA): Ensure that the option “Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication” is unchecked in the Remote tab of System Properties. This is because some clients may not support NLA.

Check Group Policy Settings: Sometimes, Group Policy settings can interfere with RDP. You can try resetting the Group Policy settings to their defaults and see if that resolves the issue.

Reinstall the Remote Desktop App: There might be an issue with the Remote Desktop app itself. Try reinstalling it to see if that fixes the problem.

Check for Conflicting Software: Some types of software, such as security software or other remote access tools, can interfere with RDP. If you have any such software installed, try disabling it temporarily to see if that resolves the issue.

Remember to always back up your data before making any changes to your system settings.
