Using VS 2022 not able to create module in IOT Edge project

Hi,

I am creating an IOT edge project by following the steps mentioned in "https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/iot-edge/how-to-visual-studio-develop-module?view=iotedge-1.4&pivots=iotedge-dev-cli" but Visual studio is creating an incomplete project, custom edge module is missing. Neither I am getting any error nor It is creating any module.

You can refer attached screenshot. edge module is missing. IOT_EDGE

As Sander says, this is the design of Visual Studio. There is a similar description in the link you mentioned.

Now, you have an IoT Edge project and an IoT Edge module in your Visual Studio solution.

In addition, there are guidelines for building and deploying modules in the official documentation.

Hi @Zhengye Xu-MSFT Thanks for replying. The link you have shared mentioned that 2 project folders will be created. I am missing the project which contain edge module and it is my main question.

I am facing the same issue, ideally when the Azure IoT Edge project template is used it should create 2 projects one .ioedgeproj and another .csproj (assuming you choose to create a C# module). Something is wrong with the Azure IoT Edge Tools 2022.

When the .csproj is created its essentially a C# console application but the best thing is it creates a template for Azure IoT Edge module on which we can build our own code and it acts a good starting or reference point.

Please fix this issue.

I'm having this same issue, the template is not working and is not possible to add a new module using the template. I followed all the instructions and is still not working properly.

Is there any solution for using Visual Studio 2022 for creating edge modules?

I encountered the same issue.

I followed the documentation, downloaded the templates, and placed them in the specified folders, but nothing happened. After spending several hours trying to fix it, I discovered that my Visual Studio was pulling templates from my company's OneDrive folder (365 Documents), not from the local folders mentioned in the documentation.

So instead of placing the template zip files in:

%userprofile%\Documents\Visual Studio 2022\Templates\ProjectTemplates\Visual C#
%userprofile%\Documents\Visual Studio 2022\Templates\ProjectTemplates\Visual C++

Make sure to place them in:

C:\Users[user]\OneDrive - [the company name]\Documents\Visual Studio 2022\Templates\ProjectTemplates\Visual C#

C:\Users[user]\OneDrive - [the company name]\Documents\Visual Studio 2022\Templates\ProjectTemplates\Visual C++ Project

Alternatively, you can navigate to the correct folders using File Explorer: Documents -> Visual Studio 2022...

welcome to this moderated community forum.

This is by design. The template should be used in combination with the Visual Studio Code tooling as seen in the prerequisites.

Visual Studio Code is more focused on folders instead of Visual Studio solutions and projects.

Personally, the VS Code editor is more than sufficient for building and deploying Azure IoT Edge modules.

If you really want to use Visual Studio, start a new project using the available IoT template found in Visual Studio, using the Azure IoT Edge tools for VS2022 extension:

Here it should create another C# console application project when using the project template in VS2022. If you right click the modules here and try to add a new module from the options it should create a new console application project with the edge module template code in program.cs. Do you know why its not doing that any more? For the VS2022 installation on another laptop it creates 2 projects AzureIoTEdgeApp1.iotedgeproj and IoTEdgeModule1.csproj. The csproj project has templates for module in program.cs, module.json template, and dockerfile template for amd64, arm32, arm64 etc.

I am having the same issue. Was this ever solved? @Poluru Sairam Sekhar saying we should use vscode is not an acceptable answer.

This worked on my previous computer but not my new laptop. Both are running the latest version of VS 2022 Community Edition 17.9.3 and the same version of the Azure Iot Edge Tools for VS2022.

One difference is the working computer is running Win 10 Pro and the "broken" one is running Win 11 Pro.

Both VS Code and Visual Studio has an issue with the project creation. We must use CLI commands to create, build, and release.

Use iotedgedev tool to create and build the IoT Edge applications.

Install Docker CE

Download and install Docker Desktop from Docker Desktop: The #1 Containerization Tool for Developers | Docker

Use WSL 2 instead of Hyper-V" option on the Configuration page is either selected or not selected based on the preferred backend.

Follow the instructions on the installation wizard to authorize the installer and proceed with the install.

When the installation is successful, select Close to complete the installation process.

Install Azure CLI

Download and install Azure CLI from https://aka.ms/installazurecliwindows

Install Azure CLI IoT

Add, Update or Remove the IoT extension with the following commands: Add: az extension add --name azure-iot Update: az extension update --name azure-iot Remove: az extension remove --name azure-iot

Install Python for PIP

Download and install Python from Download Python | Python.org

Install IoTEdgeDev

pip install iotedgedev

create a directory "c:/temp/"

docker run -it -v /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock -v c:/temp/iotedge:/home/iotedge microsoft/iotedgedev

Project creation

iotedgedev new <solution-name> (or)

iotedgedev init <folder_name> (or)

iotedgedev solution init --template csharp (or)

iotedgedev iothub setup

iotedgedev add <module-name--template <template>

iotedgedev build

iotedgedev setup

Simulator

iotedgedev start (or) iotedgedev start --setup --file config/deployment.amd64.json

The Azure IoT Edge tools for Visual Studio extension is missing the project templates for C and C# modules. We are working to resolve the issue. If you can't create IoT Edge modules using the extension, use the following workaround.

Download the following files and place them in the listed Visual Studio template directory:

There is a workaround for this. You can import projects into Visual Studio created from the following commands.

Install docker

Start the container

docker run -it -v /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock -v c:/temp/iotedge:/home/iotedge microsoft/iotedgedev

Add modules to IoT Edge solution

iotedgedev add <module-name--template <template>

Build IoT Edge module images

iotedgedev build

Setup IoT Edge simulator

iotedgedev setup

Start the IoT Edge simulator to run the solution

iotedgedev start (or) iotedgedev start --setup --file config/deployment.amd64.json

Monitor messages sent from IoT Edge Simulator to IoT Hub

iotedgedev monitor

Stop the IoT Edge simulator

iotedgedev stop

Push IoT Edge module images

iotedgedev push
