I recently installed windows 10 home on a new device and signed in with my linked microsoft account( the microsoft account is linked with an activated Windows 10 on a laptop). When I tried to activate Windows 10 on my new device, it shows the following error:

  • Edition doesn’t match
  • The Windows editions on the devices listed below don’t match the Windows edition installed on the device that you’re using at the moment.

DESKTOP-***

  • Windows 10 CoreSingleLanguage
  • Dell Inc.

I no longer need to use Windows on my old laptop. How do I activate Windows on my new device?

Windows 10

    Nevermind I solved it myself.

Anyone facing the same problem, all you have to do is choose Windows 10 Home Single Language instead of Windows 10 Home. Although my license was OEM which came with the laptop, since it was digitally linked to my microsoft account, I was able to transfer it to my new device.

All you need to do is choose "you changed your hardware" when running the activation troubleshooter. I guess the important thing is installing the same edition as your OEM license. Also using media creation tool to create your bootable usb would be nice since it has setup for all editions of Windows.
