My company has asked that I get a little Azure knowledge - so, need to take the AZ-900 course/certification...This "basics" class regarding use of Azure is pretty frustrating. The third module in that AZ-900 curriculum calls for me to create a VM using the "Azure Portal"... and "CLI". I managed to find the Azure Portal - but that is it. Why is it so difficult? If a tool/portal is needed - why is that prerequisite not addressed as a prerequisite? Most importantly: The course says to: 1. From Cloud Shell, run the following az vm create command to create a Linux VM... BUT HOW TO DO THAT? Thanks for helping a rookie on this stuff...

Hi Gary,
Please confirm the specific AZ-900 learning path/module/exercise you are attempting to complete. The general pattern for the exercises is, you click the Activate sandbox button, accept permissions/sign-in as requested, then follow the instructions to complete the exercise.
The window is split into two halves. Left side is the exercise instructions while the right side is Cloud Shell. When they want you to use the Azure portal, a link is provided in the instructions.

Well... I went back in to get specific course info... and THIS TIME, the course page had a window on the right which seemed to have the needed "portal" or cmd window open. So, I tried to figure out how to enter the command that the course suggested (to create the vm)... the next reply window below will show the screen i got back...

When you click Activate sandbox, review permissions, etc., and it completes setting up your sandbox, you should have a cloud shell on the right side that is mostly empty with a gary [ ~ }$ prompt. At this point you should click copy button on left for Task 1 and paste into the cloud shell window, then press enter.
After you paste/press enter it will run the command and show you the output.
In your screenshot, I see some extra commands such as "az group create" etc. Did you enter these?
Something to keep in mind is you need to Activate sandbox and complete both Exercises in the module before the sandbox expires. The sandbox is valid for 1 hour. If the sandbox expires you need to go back to "Unit 3 Exercise - Create an Azure Virtual Machine", click Activate sandbox, complete exercise, then finish the module and complete Unit 7 exercise.
When you are on a exercise page you can see the remaining time for the sandbox.
It could be there was some sort of temporary issue that prevented your sandbox from creating properly. What you could do is allow your sandbox to expire, Activate a new one, then complete the exercises.
I just tested and was able to complete the exercise using a fresh sandbox.

I got an email - from Venkata - and it suggested that I come back to this thread. I have come back and read it, now. TP - yes, I understand that the window on the right is for Portal... but it simply doesn't work. In three cases, I did as the course suggested - and the window on the right simply did not open for usage - and in each of those three situations, I stayed persistent - and came back again 30 min to an hour later - and tried it again after that... and in all three cases it THEN worked. Why would it do that? If the purpose of these classes is to convey knowledge, then that purpose is not being served well by the present experience, I think. Eventually, I did make progress in the courses for this... but it took probably twice as long as it should have. Also, I wanted to attend a Fundamentals training class - and I have signed up for one multiple times - but - though MS says they will reach out ahead of class day for those, I have NEVER received such communication - and consequently have never had a way to actually attend. I tried it once again the other day... and the class is to occur day after tomorrow (on 28th)... but AGAIN - no contact at all from MS... so, I have no link or info with which to attend. Azure seems very powerful... but I hope the product itself is less frustrating that it's corresponding training.
