SharePoint server on-premise modern search page issue with documents result

Hi,

I have SharePoint server subscription edition with June 2023 CU. The farm contains office online server to enable view and edit documents in browser.

I am able to open documents in browser, if I browse them from document library and classic search page. I have noticed that documents url are rendered with 'wopiframe.aspx'. e.g. https://myfqdn/sites/projectA/_layouts/15/WopiFrame.aspx?sourcedoc=%7D9431234E-4E21-1235-F56C-7111CFC169A9%7D&file=report.xlsx&action=default&DefaultItemOpen=1

But the issue is in modern search page. When I search for documents the links are showing actual location of document. e.g. https://myfqfn/sites/projectA/Report.xlsx

This is causing documents to download on computer instead opening it in browser.

Is there way to to fix open action in modern search page?

Hi @Anonymous Did you ever get an answer as to this issue??? Have 2 tickets open with MS and the response it's it's by design which I struggle to understand. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

No, unfortunately it is still an issue for us. We are using classic search as workaround.

It is pity that Microsoft recognizes the issue but has no resolution planned.

HI @Anonymous Thank you for replying, much appreciated. How did you manage the workaround to the Classic Search for site level searches on the modern sites?? We've tried a few things but so far non have worked consistently. Any feedback would be highly appreciated

Hi Paul WILLS,

You can add webpart page in site pages and then use classic search webparts. You will have to add shortcut to this page in quick navigation and instruct users to use this page for search, because standard searchbox cannot route query to custom page.

HI @Anonymous Thank you for sharing this with me. Indeed I've tried URL Rewrite and also a few other configuration changes but with no success. I'll evaluate your solution to see if it fits our platform from an end user perspective. Thanks again for sharing, much appreciated

Thank you for posting in this community.

If you open SharePoint documents in Office Web Apps, then the documents URL will be rendered with 'wopiframe.aspx'. But the document URL in SharePoint search page is the real path of the document. Clicking on the link here does not assume that you are trying to open the file using the Office web app, so the file will be downloaded directly.

Please try the following settings to see if you can get the file to open in your browser:

1.Go to Library settings->Advanced settings->Opening Documents in the Browser. Select "Open in the browser".

2.Please try to add "?web=1" after the documents' URL.

For example: https://myfqfn/sites/projectA/Report.xlsx?web=1

3.Maybe something is wrong with Office Online Server. You can disconnect SharePoint Server from Office Online Server and then reconfigure SharePoint Server to use Office Online Server.

Option #1

I tried to set "Open in the browser" option in document library setting. Then ran full crawl. But issue is still there.

Option #2

If I manually copy document url and append "?web=1" in browse then document opens in browser with office online server. But how can I add this in search results in modern search page?

Option #3

I disconnected and reconfigured SP server connection. Still issue not resolved.

It is strange that this issue is only reproducible in modern search page. It works fine in classic search center and document library. Both classic search center and modern search uses same content source (Local SharePoint sites) so I think they would be used same managed properties internally.

Could it be a bug in modern search page in subscription edition?

Hi @SABA365,

Apologize for the late reply due to holidays.

My colleagues and I discussed and found that Classic and modern searches are not the same. If this doesn't affect you much you can go with classic mode, if this affects you a lot then I suggest you open a ticket to get more help.

Is there an answer to this issue?? We have the same issue whilst trying to upgrade to SharePoint Subscription and is causing us to freeze the project.
