After the domain was disjoined, computer objects did not get removed automatically from the domain.

There are no built-in options to automate cleaning up stale accounts. You will need to use a script or 3rd party tool.
Command to find all disabled computers:
Get-ADComputer -Filter "Enabled -eq 'false'" | select Name, Enabled
Find disabled computers and delete them:
Get-ADComputer -Filter "Enabled -eq 'false'" | Remove-ADComputer

That's the default action. When you disjoin computers from the domain, the account remains in the directory. It gets marked Disabled.
