Email Alias in Outlook

I have an email alias set up as its own inbox in Outlook, but when I create a new email and change the from address to the alias, the draft shows up in my primary email drafts instead of the alias drafts. Similarly, when I send an email from the alias, it shows up in my primary emails sent, but not in the alias sent folder. Is there a rule or a work around for this behavior?

if using exchange online mailbox there is a setting to 'Turn on sending from aliases'

Without this setting, the from: alias-email-address falls back to primary-email-address

You will find this setting in Exchange admin center > Settings > Mail Flow

To change the setting you will need to have exchange online admin rights and this change will affect all mailboxes.
