Can't link a subscription to External ID tenant

I've followed the process to create a customer tenant and have specified a freshly-created subscription in my source tenant with only a single resource group and nothing else in it. While the customer tenant is successfully created, the subscription is not linked. Attempting to link a subscription from the customer tenant shows no options. I manually changed the directory of the subscription in the source tenant and moved it to the customer tenant, but when I try to link it, I get the error "This operation is not allowed on a B2C tenant".

I raised this with support but despite being able to reproduce the error they have been unable to find a resolution thus far and explained that as this is a preview product, behaviour may not be as advertised. I wonder though, surely adding a subscription is a fundamental requirement so I must be doing something wrong - has anyone any suggestions?

Thanks for reaching out.

As per documentation you mentioned, you are trying to create a customer tenant in Microsoft Entra External ID which is different from Azure AD B2C.

Did you provide "B2C" name to your new tenant?

Currently, Microsoft Entra Externa lD allows to create tenant using two ways:

1.Free Trial which does not require subscription.

2.Create tenant using Azure subscription which requires subscription at the time of creation.

Could you please confirm which way you used to create the customer tenant?

I'm having the same issue. The Entra Customer tenant was created using the Free Trial method.

Thanks for your reponse @Shweta Mathur - I did not select free trial, I selected to use a subscription and allocated the subscription at setup. The subscription did not link and it does not show any resources in the source tenant either.

I see that the link subscriptions option has now been replaced with a page stating that "this feature isn't ready for customer scenarios yet, but we're working on it". @Shweta Mathur I'd really like to know how, without a subscription, it is intended that the CIAM tenant would be usable in any practical sense since basic features such as groups rely on a license and I have no licensed users in my CIAM tenant at all, even for the 1:5 guest user ratio to apply.

Thanks for your time and patience throughout this issue.

I replicated the scenario in my lab and encountered the same situation. Since this product is currently in its preview stage, this particular feature remains free for the time being. To prevent any charges related to this feature, subscriptions are not currently connected. I anticipate that they will integrate Monthly Active Users (MAU) with Customer Identity and Access Management (CIAM) at a later point.
